Wired

The Computer Services Department maintains an extensive wired communication network across all office space, classrooms, lecture theatres and computer laboratories. These network connections ranges from speeds of 1Gbps through 10 Gbps.

Generally all Institute computing equipment, including staff computer equipment, are predominately connected by using a wired Ethernet connection. Wired connection is faster and more secure than wireless connectivity

Although from a pedagogical perspective it is desirable to give the maximum level of free access to the Institute wired networks, this is not consistent with the Institute legal, ethical and functional requirements. It is necessary to constrain the connection of external equipment according to the following condition:
The connection of personal equipment (which is not the property of Letterkenny IT) to the Institute network is absolutely forbidden. Where special circumstances exist which require this, formal permission should be sought from the IT Manager or the Senior Technical Officer. Wired connection to the Institute network should be done with the assistance and support of authorised Institute technical staff. Staff should not make unauthorised direct wired connections.
