New Entrant Sports Scholarships
The New Entrant Sports Scholarship is designed to support talented athletes on their journey of combining a top-class third level education and the highest standards of performance in their chosen sport(s).
We also consider applications on a case-by-case basis in other sports from athletes who demonstrate an ability to compete at Junior or Senior International level.
- Applicants will be required to submit the online application form available here.
- Applicants are also required to submit an official confirmation letter from a County Board, League of Ireland Soccer Club (or senior equivalent) or
Basketball Area Board confirming that the applicant is a member and a regular starting player of an Inter-county GAA (minor, u20 or senior), League of Ireland (or senior equivalent) panel or Basketball International
Ireland panel/Academy/National League team. Other Team Sports – Letter from National Governing Body (NGB) or Sports Association confirming that you have competed at an advanced level and displayed outstanding potential e.g. National, or International. Individual athletes are required to provide evidence of competing at international level. This letter should be submitted after submission of your application and upon request from
sports@atu.ie
- Closing date for applications is 1 July 2023. Applications will not be permitted after the closing date.
In order to be eligible for the award of a scholarship, applicants must be:
- A new entrant entering on a full-time programme at ATU Donegal for the first time in 2022/23. This includes a person entering:
- the first year of a full-time undergraduate programme, or
- as advanced entry on a subsequent year of an undergraduate programme, or
- a full-time student on a postgraduate programme.
- And the applicant must:
- be/have been a member of a GAA Inter-county team (Minor, U20 or Senior) and a regular starting player in the current year or in the previous 12-24 months.
- be/have been a member of a League of Ireland Soccer team and a regular starting player in the current year.
- be/have been a member of an Irish International Underage Basketball panel or Academy or National League team and a regular starting player in the current year or in the previous 18 months.
- be/have been a member of a team sport competing at National/International level outside of GAA, Soccer and Basketball and displayed outstanding potential and a regular starting player in the current year or in the previous 18 months.
- have demonstrated an ability to compete as a Junior or Senior International and would normally have competed at European/World Championship level in an individual sport recognised by Student Sport Ireland
Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of €1500 or €750. In subsequent years, successful candidates will be considered for further annual scholarships of €1500 or €750 provided they continue to meet the eligibility criteria and performance criteria.

- Conditional offers will be made within 1 month of the closing date.
- Only those who have accepted a valid offer of a full-time place, and are registered at ATU Donegal, will receive the New Entrant Sports Scholarship award.
- All decisions made by the Sports Scholarship Committee are final.
- The Scholarship in only available in the year in which it is offered. It may not be deferred
Payment of all New Entrant Sports Scholarship Awards will be made to the successful applicant, following evidence of registration onto a full-time programme at ATU Donegal, being obtained by the Sports Office.
Payment of the New Entrant Sports Scholarship will be made to the successful candidate in 3 instalments as follows:
- The first instalment will be paid to the payee in November,
- The second instalment will be paid in February, subject to the candidate passing examinations.
- The third instalment will be paid in June, subject to progressing to the next academic year.

Full-Time Sports Scholarship
The LYIT Full-Time Sports Scholarship is aimed at any existing and registered full-time students who have demonstrated the ability to progress their sporting endeavours during the academic year, when representing LYIT, and externally with their club/representative team. The value of the scholarship ranges from €500 - €1,000.
