Erasmus+ & Study Abroad

ErasmusGo on Exchange within the European Union, through the Erasmus Programme. Opportunities in both study and work placements are available to ATU students.

Study Abroad for ATU Donegal Students

Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme to support education and training in Europe. It supports students to embark on transformative study and work experiences abroad.

Students can choose to immerse themselves in a foreign academic setting for 3-12 months or engage in a traineeship (work placement) for 2-12 months in a participating country.

These opportunities enrich your study and work experience. Research underpins Erasmus+ mobilities to not only enhance academic horizons but also improve intercultural and social understanding.

Erasmus+ offers an unforgettable and fulfilling journey of personal growth while getting to live, travel and discover a new place.

  • You must be a full-time registered ATU student.
  • You must have successfully completed at least one year of your academic studies.
  • You must be given permission from your ATU faculty / Academic Advisor to go on Erasmus for either one semester or a full year.
  • See list here according to your Faculty.
  • Traineeships can take place in most places of work in another EU country, as long as the placement will be counted towards your academic success.

Note: Contact the ERASMUS OFFICE first – erasmus.donegal@atu.ie

Yes! Recognition is given for the study period abroad by ATU. There will be a Learning Agreement developed between you, your academic coordinator here in ATU and the host institution, which will outline the modules you will take while abroad.

For Traineeships, recognition is also given by ATU, much like recognition for a work placement here. A Traineeship Learning Agreement will be developed between you, your academic co-ordinator and the host employer. This will indicate precisely what tasks you will complete throughout your traineeship.

Yes! All students taking part in the Erasmus+ Mobility exchange will receive an Erasmus+ grant. This does not affect any other grants to which you are entitled.

The Erasmus+ mobility grant is a contribution to help cover any additional costs you may incur as part of your Erasmus. It is not intended to cover all costs of the mobility.

If the length of your study/traineeship changes, so will your grant amount!

Funding depends on which country you go to and for how long, but it roughly equates to €330 per month. Amounts are calculated on a daily rate so it will also depend on your exact start and end date.

Students in receipt of SUSI grants will receive an extra €250 per month.

If you are an EU citizen, you have the right to take up employment in any Member State irrespective of your place of residence. Non- EU students will not be able to work when they are on Erasmus.
