-- Mandy Douglas After successfully completing my BSc Hons Degree in LYIT, it was my desire to pursue a full time career in teaching, within the area of IT security. I had previously worked as a part time IT tutor and was finding it difficult to gain fulltime employment without the relevant level of education and experience. So, to build on my current skillsets and to further enhance my job prospects within the education sector, I decided to take my education to the next level and complete an MSc by Research in Computing. It was important to me that the Master’s I chose combined a challenging theoretical background with real world implementations, whilst also providing me with some teaching experience that would be beneficial to me moving forward with my career – The Master of Research through Research programme offered that combination. This Master’s offered an independent approach to working towards a postgraduate level degree without the constraints of attending timetabled lectures, which I preferred. At first, I was a little sceptical of the skillset required to complete the Masters successfully and also had reservations of how difficult it would be to juggle time between work and family and college but, I needn’t have worried! Although there were times that it was challenging, it’s totally worth the effort. The supervision I received was excellent - my lecturers were always helpful and supportive and were willing to make time if I had a problem. I made so many friends inside and outside of my course and I am extremely grateful that I was giving the opportunity to study at postgraduate level - to conduct research I was interested, whilst also gaining vital experience in my teaching. My MSc by Research investigated the study of “Using SVD and DWT Based Steganography to Enhance the Security of Watermarked Fingerprint Images”. – I received a distinction and have had various academic paper publications from my dissertation. The skills I gained while completing my Masters helped me to gain the level of education and experience required to gain full time employment within the education sector and I successfully secured the role as Assistant Lecturer in the Dept. of Computing. During the past 8 years I’ve had the privilege to work with some interesting people and continue my professional development progress. It was definitely an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.
