An MSc through Research can be undertaken as either:
- a standalone degree lasting two years full-time. Successful completion of this research degree will lead to being awarded an MSc or MRes.
- a precursor to a PhD programme. In these cases, the student first enrols a PhD student into an MSc/MRes programme as a way of deciding whether their research skills are strong enough for carrying out a PhD.
