8 weeks / Level 7 / Part-time
Under the Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act and Fire Services Act, building owners, managers and those with designated responsibility for fire safety have a statutory obligation to ensure fire safety standards are appropriately maintained in all buildings. The course is offered entirely online over a 3 day lecture block with follow up tutorials and assessment.
This course aims to promote the practice of good fire safety management as a vital tool in the overall fire safety strategy of building management. The assessment introduces learners to legislative obligations and maintenance programmes as part of this strategy. Teaching and assessment methodologies will be by block online learning combined with online support and assessment, incorporating a blended learning approach. On successful completion of the module the learner will be able to: 1. Interpret the legal obligations in respect of Fire Safety Management in building use. 2. Define the role of active and passive fire safety systems in maintaining adequate levels of fire safety in buildings 3. Interpret and implement appropriate fire safety management policy and procedures within buildings of normal to moderate complexity. 4. Appraise the impact of fire safety management policies in their own work environment The aim of the course is to equip the learner with the skills and qualification to fulfill his/ her legal obligations as Fire Safety Manager within his/ her own organisation.

Information for:
I was attracted to the Certificate in Applied Fire Safety Management due to the course being online and it contains modules that are appropriate to my current profession within the Fire Service.
The lectures and tutorials which we received weekly cover real-world modules associated with fire safety standards. We were encouraged to participate in each lecture with our opinions and we were consistently encouraged to share our experiences with all of the class. I found this engagement very helpful.
As well as being taught the theory behind each module, we were very lucky that the lecturers on the course had vast amounts of experience in fire safety standards and they were able to transmit their knowledge and experience to us even via the online portal.
The knowledge and experience I have gained has encouraged me to pursue further education in Fire Safety; and it is down to this course as it has given me the skills and confidence to do this. I cannot compliment all the staff at LYIT anymore for their commitment to this course particularly as we were still within the depths of the unknown during the Covid 19 Pandemic
