Hosted by the Women’s Association of Computing Machinery at LYIT

LYIT, in conjunction with the Association of Computing Machinery - Women (ACM-W), recently organised a two-day Celebration of Careers in Computing. This event was part of a series entitled ACM Celebration of Women in Computing. Other similar events were organised around the world. Over the course of these two days, the event focused on providing information on the types of careers available within the computing industry, and the skills and attributes that companies are seeking when carrying out interviews.

A Computing Careers Fair was hosted on the first evening. Many women working in computing companies attended the event. Companies from both north and south of the border were in attendance and companies included: Ignite, Microsoft, AllState, Fujitsu, Klarna, Cloud Ranger, Gartan Tech, Intuity, Optum and Cyberrisk Aware. These industry representatives provided advice on how to improve applicants’ skillsets and the focus of their CVs for particular companies.

Attendees of the event also had the opportunity to increase their skills by partaking in different workshops, such as Serverless Architecture by Mariana Bocoi, Continuous Integration with Michael McGrath, and BlockChain Revolution by Previn Kutty, or the Hackathon organised by Microsoft.

Speaking about the event, Ruth Lennon, Lecturer in Computing and organiser of the ACM-W event, outlined the need for events that enable students to showcase their skills and realise the opportunities available to them in new and interesting areas. Ruth stated that, "it was wonderful to see such a variety of companies travelling to Letterkenny to meet with our skilled students".

The Department of Computing at LYIT is always encouraging more women to enrol onto computing courses. Recent initiatives pursued by the Department include the Bi-Annual Women in Computing event for secondary school students, scholarships, etc.  Thomas Dowling, Head of Department, commented, “it’s always great to work with industry to outline the many opportunities available to women in computing”.

LYIT welcome applications from all type of applicants for both their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes commencing this September. For further information check out the Find a Course section of this website or email thomas.dowling@lyit.ie.
