Last week Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) was delighted to host Governor Philip Lane and members of his team from The Central Bank of Ireland on-campus.

Governor Lane, Gráinne McEvoy (Director of Consumer Protection), Kevin Mullen, (Head of Asset Management Supervision) Geraldine Hannon (Head of Banking Supervision) and Claire O’Gorman (HR Business partner) visited Donegal as part of an extended outreach visit to build understanding of the Central Bank and listen to a range of views from the North West region.

On Tuesday 12 March, the Governor hosted an evening event in Letterkenny curated by journalist Richard Curran. Despite Storm Gareth, there was a great turnout representing a cross-section of the local community. Questions on the night covered a broad range of topics including Brexit, SME lending, Credit Unions and competition in financial services.

The following morning, Wednesday 13 March, the team visited LYIT where Financial Services Regulation and Compliance were topics of discussion when the Governor addressed students from LYIT. Speaking about Governor Lane’s visit, Siobhan Cullen, Head of Department of Law and Humanities said “We are delighted to welcome the Governor and his Senior Team to LYIT. This is a unique opportunity for all our students, especially those studying Financial Services Governance & Compliance and it was clear from the extensive Q&A session hosted by Governor Lane just how relevant these topics currently are”.

Joanne Enright, Lecturer in Financial Services added that “the visit is quite timely as we are about to launch an online version of our M.A/ Postgraduate Diploma in Governance, Compliance & Data Protection in Financial Services with a view to extending the geographical reach of the programme”.

The visit at LYIT ended with a tour of the CoLab, Letterkenny IT’s innovation and incubation centre and an introduction to some of its 60 technology-based enterprises.

LYIT is currently recruiting for its Masters Programme and Postgraduate Diploma in Governance, Compliance & Data Protection in Financial Services which is due to commence in September 2019. For further information contact siobhan.cullen@lyit.ie or lisa.devlin@lyit.ie
