The objective of the Sanctuary Scholarship scheme is to encourage and enable international protection applicants, or those already granted international protection who are required to pay tuition fees and/or cannot access student finance, to participate and succeed in higher education.
In order to be eligible for the award of the Sanctuary Scholarship, applicants must:
- Have applied and be accepted onto an undergraduate programme within ATU Donegal for the relevant academic year
- Be an international protection applicant or have been granted international protection e.g. an Asylum Seeker, Refugee, individual who has been granted Subsidiary Protection or Discretionary Leave to Remain (DLR), or some other form of temporary status (evidence is required).
- Are not currently eligible for ‘free fees’ for a full-time undergraduate course or for a SUSI fee grant
Up to 3 scholarships will be awarded. The scholarships consist of a fee waiver of the non-EU fee. Successful applicants may also avail of academic supports in maths and communications.
- Conditional offers will be made within 1 month of the closing date.
- As it is expected that the number of applications will exceed the number of scholarships available, in the case of those who have asylum seeker status, priority will be given to the eligible asylum-seeking applicants who are living in local direct provision centres.
- Only those who have accepted a valid offer of a full-time place, and are registered at ATU Donegal, will receive the Sanctuary Scholarship.
- All decisions made by the Scholarship Committee are final.
- The Scholarship in only available in the year in which it is offered. It may not be deferred
- If the holder withdraws from the programme for which they have registered, they will forfeit the bursary
- Scholarships will be renewed on successful progression to the next year of the course, where relevant. It will not be paid in respect of a repeat period of study
- A scholarship may be awarded for a maximum of four years full-time (unless the natural duration of the undergraduate programme exceeds four years)
- ATU Donegal may terminate a scholarship at any time, where the scholarship holder no longer meets the terms and conditions of the scholarship fund.
- Awardees may be invited to participate/attend publicity events. Participation by award recipients in publicity events is voluntary, and there are no obligations on award recipients in this regard
- Applicants will be required to submit the online application form.
- Applicants will be required to submit proof of
- Original letter from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform declaring that the person is a Refugee under Section 17 of the Refugee Act, 1996. OR
- Original letter from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform confirming the family member status of the refugee under Section 18 of the Refugee Act, 1996. OR
- Original letter from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform stating that the person has Humanitarian Leave to Remain in the State, or Permission to Remain in the State following a determination not to make a deportation order. OR
- Letter from the Officer of the Promotion of Migrant Integration confirming Programme Refugee Status
- Closing date for applications is 1 July 2023. Applications will not be permitted after the closing date.
