Amira from Malaysia

BA (Hons) in Law (LLB)

Amira from MalaysiaOn the 9th of September 2016, I was on a flight on my way to Ireland from my home country, Malaysia. I had never been in Ireland before so I had no idea what to expect. After 13 hours in the air, I finally arrived at Dublin Airport. The first thing I noticed was the weather. Coming from a tropical country, Ireland’s cool weather was definitely a big change for me. Luckily, I came prepared with jackets, jumpers and fluffy socks to spare. Another thing I noticed were the people. Everyone was so friendly and nice, from the airport security right down to the nice bus driver that took me all the way up to Letterkenny. My first day in Ireland was definitely a 10/10.

I arrived in Letterkenny and was immediately placed in my student accommodation. The first week here was spent exploring Letterkenny and seeing what it had to offer. Registration day came and went. I had made a few friends then, but I never expected how many more friends I would make throughout the rest of my first year in Letterkenny IT. Just in my first week of college, I had made many new friends and I was enjoying my lectures.

There were times when I felt homesick, especially during breaks such as Halloween and Christmas. But I took the time to explore Ireland and its beautiful landscapes. On sunny days, my housemate and I would get snacks and drinks and drive to the closest beach. We would spend the entire day just lazing in the sun and talking. Sometimes, I would get my camera out and we would go to the town park and take pictures. On nights where sleep just escapes us, we would go to the cinema and catch the latest film. You never really run out of things to do in Ireland, even here in Letterkenny. You just have to look in the right places.

My first year in Letterkenny was definitely an eventful year. I made memories and friends for life. I am fortunate enough to be able to return to Ireland for a second year. I still have so many things to check off my bucket list and so many places in Ireland I have not yet explored. I look forward to making more memories and meet new people in my second year here!
