Helen Masterson

LYIT contributed to our business success and operational excellence

Helen MastersonHelen Masterson began her Master of Business in Innovation & Leadership at a time of enormous change for her company, Moll Industries Ireland Ltd. Helen is the Managing Director and co-owner of Moll, which is a Donegal Townbased company that specialises in a wide range of Plastic Injection Moulding, Assembly and Product Development.

Helen attributes her Masters education to the skills in strategic thinking and a new approach to Change Management she gained for a management buyout at Moll.

She said: “As I had just accepted a place on the course, an opportunity arose from Corporate for a management buyout. Over the two years of the course I proceeded with the pursuit of the buy out and successfully completed the process with my husband in June 2010. The Managing Change module had the most impact as it gave me the tools to approach this enormous change that was to take place; it allowed me to understand, manage and cope effectively with the change and, in turn, bring all employees along with us.”

Helen is originally from Belmullet in Co Mayo, and currently lives in Donegal Town with her husband and three children. The structure of the Executive Masters Programme , she said, suited her work and life balance, and proved to be very relevant to her exact needs at the time.

Modules on the Master of Business in Innovation & Leadership are all designed to develop the leadership talents of managers to deliver significant business impact in the professional workplace. The flexible structure allows students to continue working in their business while learning key management skills.

“The structure of the course modules allows you to work full-time while upskilling. The course content, and the way it's delivered, the calibre of the lecturers and speakers – all were excellent,” Helen said.

Helen believes that executive education is a necessity for business leaders: “Leaders and managers especially need to allow themselves the opportunity to upskill, expand and grow; to provide themselves the opportunity to learn a strategic thinking approach. It’s an excellent networking tool and if you go into it with an open mind you will obtain new and updated knowledge not just from the course but from your peers also.”

Moll Industries Ltd has had significant expansion and change since the 1980s. Helen, who also has an Engineering degree, has worked in various management positions and has represented the overall corporate management team in the US.

Studying at LYIT, Helen said, ensured she was well prepared for the evolution of the plant. “It was a positive contributing factor to the overall success of the initial purchase and the operational excellence we experience today.”

Why chose LYIT? Helen said: “LYIT is a fine college with forward thinking leadership and focuses on providing relevant skills for business and industry as a whole.”
