Athletic Therapy and Exercise Rehabilitation

I enrolled at LYIT in 2012 on the Honours Degree course in Sports Coaching and Performance (now known as the BSc (Hons) in Sports Exercise with degree award options: Performance or Physical Education). My career ambition was to work for the FAI and I believed this course would help me achieve that goal. I learned so much throughout my four years at LYIT and also gained a strong relationship with fellow colleagues and tutors alike. I felt that the course had a good mixture of sport, business and science related elements from both a practical and theoretical perspective. I gained valuable coaching badges from a wide range of sports, which was pivotal for my future career. The work experience module was also very valuable - I used the FAI coaching badges that I had gained in the first couple of years, to go out and coach in schools in the Letterkenny area. In addition, the business modules such as Marketing, has proven beneficial in my current role. As the FAI camps Administrative Assistant, I work with 34,000 children, over 1,000 coaches and 500 clubs nationwide as well as working with our camps sponsors, website database operators and logistics company. A lot of these are non-sports related companies therefore the knowledge I gained from our business modules, has been invaluable. In conclusion, LYIT offer sports courses that most definitely have a career pathway and valuable life skills and knowledge.

I found that even though there are thousands of students in LYIT and dozens of different courses there was always lecturers, advice, resources and support available when needed. Within my course, the balance of practical based work and theory has given me not only the knowledge but an added advantage to continue and complete my Masters in Exercise and Nutrition. I could not recommend this course enough to someone interested in this line of study.

My 4 years at LYIT were among the best years of my life. LYIT not only helped me excel in my academic studies but supported me in my sporting career, offering me two sports scholarships during my time there. The support network from the lecturers throughout my 4 years was second to none and to this day I can still call on them for advice if I need it. Following on from my studies, I am currently employed as a Rehabilitation/Strength and Conditioning Trainer for Tommy Gallagher Injury Management in Letterkenny.

The practical aspect of the course has proved invaluable and has given me the confidence and competency to flourish in my current career. To anyone who is thinking of pursuing a career in this industry, I can highly recommend LYIT as your chosen college. From fitness testing, programme design to building client relationships the LYIT can offer you the necessary skills to succeed in this ever-growing industry.
