Science in Computing for Educators

I completed the Higher Diploma in Computing for Educators in 2018-19. I had only intended in completing one module, Coding Principles, however I found the workload was completely doable and I could realistically complete it whilst working in school during the week. The workshops that were held during the weekends and the support from the lecturers made this possible. I ended up completing another five modules, Coding with Syntax, Digital Citizenship, Computer Systems, Database Technology and Robotics for the Classroom. I have since received Teaching Council registration for the subject of 'Computer Science.

I wanted to upskill in coding to gain a solid undedstanding of the concept of computational thinking and coding (python) so that I could implement these skills in my classroom. With the many demands on my personal and school life, Coding for Teachers (Concept to Syntax) was offered perfectly; a flexible mode with face-to-face workshops supplemented by pre-reading on the VLE. I found the course interesting, challenging at times but very manageable; it is a practical course, I set aside time each Wednesday night to engage with the VLE and enjoyed the interactions with other teachers, it created opportunities for me to build a network with others and to share good practices. The face-to-face workshops allowed us to be more ‘hands-on’ and the facilities offered by LYIT ensured everyone was supported throughout. The workshops were very well structured and led by a very helpful lecturer. I now feel much more confident adopting many of the concepts learned on this course such as my ability to formulate problems logically; to design, write and test code and I look forward to implementing these skills in my own classroom. I am more able to cater for the needs of my students as computing is an everyday part of modern society and that I am now able to offer them real insight into possible future studies in computer science. I had confirmation from the Teaching Council that this course is accredited making it very worthwhile

I first applied for the HDip in Computing in August 2018. I had no previous experience in coding or computer science so I was anxious, but the course did not require any previous experience, so that was a relief in some respects! I think that the structure and layout of the modules was designed perfectly for teachers as each module involved online discussions and two Saturday sessions. The online discussions involved sharing experiences and opinions, whereas the Saturday sessions provided hands on experience with coding and other practical activities. It was a great opportunity to connect with other educators from primary, post primary, adult education and industry and to share knowledge and ideas. I learned a lot from this course, such as working with Scratch, Python, elements of Digital Citizenship, how to build a computer (Computer Systems), creating databases (Database Technologies) and learning how to incorporate robots in the classroom (Robotics in the Classroom). Since undertaking this course, I have applied my knowledge and experience to my own classroom. I have introduced elements of Scratch to my 1st year students and used Makey Makey devices in my subject area. I have also undertaken lessons involving being a good digital citizen, using online and offline techniques. I am looking forward to applying more ideas and concepts to the classroom that I learned from this course. Overall, I am happy to have completed this course. I would encourage.
