Careers Awareness Week

Open invitation to attend free seminars

This week (9 - 12 February) the Careers Office is hosting a Careers Awareness Week from 1.30 - 2.30 pm each day in the CoLab Seminar room.  Both current and past students alike, as well as the general public, are invited to attend any of the free seminars.  If you are available and want to get your career plans off to a great start, why not attend one or all of these insightful seminars.

The content of these seminars are as follows:

Monday 9 February
APPLYING TO POSTGRADUATE COURSES
Finding out what’s available and how to craft a winning personal statement.
By the end of this seminar participants will:
• Know how to research the various course options available in Ireland, UK and further afield
• Be aware of the types of postgraduate degrees available
• Know the key questions to ask of department heads
• Be aware of common mistakes applicants make on personal statements and know what course selectors look for in personal statements

Tuesday, 10 February
USING LINKEDIN IN YOUR JOB SEARCH
Step by step guide on setting up a good profile, do’s and don’ts, and how to get your profile noticed.
By the end of this seminar participants will:
• Learn how to set up a good profile
• Be aware of the do’s and don’ts of using LinkedIn for job search
• Know how to get their profile noticed by the corporates.

Wednesday, 11 February
SUCCESSFUL JOB APPLICATIONS
What employers look for in CVs and cover letters.
By the end of this seminar participants will:
• Be aware of the research they need to do prior to writing up a job application
• Know what criteria employers use to select applicants
• Be aware of the common mistakes that job seekers make on CVs and cover letters
• Know what information they need to include on cover letters and CVs.

Thursday, 12 February
COPING WITH INTERVIEWS
Be more confident in preparing for interviews and dealing with the tough questions.
By the end of this seminar participants will:
• Know the criteria employers use to select candidates for interview
• Understand the steps needed to effectively prepare for interview
• Be aware of the common mistakes candidates make at interview
• Gain an insight into the typical questions that are asked at interview
• Understand the S.T.A.R. strategy for answering questions (regarded in the industry as the most effective method for answering questions).

Seminars will last for 30-35 minute duration with ample time for questions and answers.
