LYIT Accounting Students win national CIMA competition
LYIT Accounting Students the team to beat
The LYIT team has, once again, won the national final of the CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC). The GBC is an international business competition for undergraduates around the world designed to bring out the best in the young business leaders of tomorrow. It focuses on strategic business issues such as financial analysis, corporate governance, ethics and shareholder value. The competition, based on a detailed case study, requires a presentation from the students followed by a rigorous Q&A session by 6 adjudicators. Competition from other colleges is intense.
The LYIT team of Emmett Paterson (Convoy), Breege Boyce (Carrigart), Daragh Boyle (Letterkenny), and Stephen McGlynn (Cloghan) have all just recently finished their honours accounting degree in LYIT. They saw off keen competition from other Irish universities and Institutes of Technology to become the Irish 2014 champions, overcoming a strong UCC team in the final. The team received the winners’ trophy, a cheque for €1,000 and the right to represent Ireland in the global final which will be held in Mumbai, India, in August. In India, the team will compete with the national winners from 25 other countries. LYIT also won the national final in 2009 and represented Ireland in the global final which was held in Singapore.
In the competition’s 7 year history, Paul O’Sullivan, team mentor, has coached the LYIT team to reach 6 national finals, finish runner-up 4 times and win the competition outright twice. They remain the only Institute of Technology to have won this prestigious national competition. Patricia Doherty, Head of Department of Business Studies, was thrilled for the LYIT team, “I would like to congratulate the team on this hugely significant achievement and wish them every success in India.”
Well done, LYIT!
