LYIT Lecturer and the Adventures of a Font
(Article in Donegal News, 27 September 2013)
A Lecturer in Graphic Design at LYIT yesterday (26/9/13) launched his latest book entitled ‘Joyscribe’, a book about the adventures of a typeface or font.
Speaking to the Donegal News in advance of the launch author Michiel Drost, a native of the Netherlands, explained that he always had a special interest in typeface.
“About ten years ago I started to design my own fonts then seven years ago I published my first book on the subject which was well received,” Michiel said.
He gave the example of the Book of Kells which was probably written by four different scribes.
“I create my own typeface and do it for fun - I thought ‘Joyscribe’ would be an appropriate title for the book.
“The first part is about the history of printing and letters. I explain in it how I arrived at designing my own typeface.
“The second half of the book contains different features about things which interest me including the story of Kilbeggan Distillery and the great telescope of Birr. I use my own typeface in these features,” he said.
The cover of the book is quirky showing Michiel emerging from the sea, dressed in a suit, carrying the letter ‘a’ as if he had rescued it from the deep.
“The general manner of the stories provide an easy read,” Michiel added.
The book was launched in LYIT yesterday and will be available at Donegal Stationary for €29.99. It will be available online shortly.
