Thursday, 14 March and Thursday, 21 March, saw the commencement of an innovative new initiative by LYIT students.  For the first time, free classes in basic computer skills were offered at LYIT to the over 55s.  The course was the brainchild of 4th year Graphic Design student Aaron Nepgen, and was facilitated by volunteers from the Friends in Time Community Outreach Scheme that was established by the LYIT Health and Social Society.  Enrolment was organised by Students’ Union President, David Heraty.

The mature learners were welcomed on arrival by LYIT President Paul Hannigan.  One-to-one tuition was provided to cater for the varying levels of computer skills.  The nervousness that may have existed, for both student tutors and mature learners alike, prior to the class quickly melted away and there was a great sense of excitement among all.  There were joyful scenes as the wonders of the Internet were brought to many for the first time.  Memories of yesterday were evoked and hobbies were researched at the click of a mouse.  Others concentrated on setting up email accounts and exploring Skype.

The mature learners are now eagerly looking forward to their course awards ceremony, which takes place in early April.
