Irish language fun day on-campus

Letterkenny Institute of Technology held its fourth annual Lá na Gaeilge on Tuesday, 13 March 2012 to mark ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’.

Lá na Gaeilge 2012_8 A full day of Irish language themed activities took place throughout the day.  Staff, students and the public got involved and used their ‘cúpla focal’.

Throughout the day an information desk gave students the opportunity to find out about Irish language courses, learning resources and services.

The Irish night at An Dánlann that evening was a lively and enjoyable night with traditional music, drama and dance in the company of ‘Cairde LYIT’ - Pat Campbell (Keyboards), Marian Kerr (Flute), Finbar Rafferty (Mandolin/Mandola), Oisín Rafferty (Guitar) and Lá na Gaeilge 2012_6 Rachel Akkoç (Vocals).

Jordan Patton (Banjo) and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Leitir Ceanainn got the crowd going with their traditional music sets.  The audience enjoyed a poem entitled ‘An Tincéir Sás Ó’Néill’ presented by Amy Nic Giolla Iontóg (a winner in poetry recital at Réalt Uladh recently).  The Quigley School of Irish Dance had onlookers enthralled with their dancing talent.

The Institute would like to take this opportunity to thank all who helped in organising Lá na Gaeilge.  Particular thanks go to all those who performed and to Arena 7, The Swilly Inn and LYITSU for their kind sponsorship of events during Seachtain na Gaeilge at LYIT.
