Firsts for LYIT Design Graduates
LYIT Design graduates are making their mark in creative industries.
LYIT Design graduates are making their mark in creative industries, both in Ireland and abroad. The college has a high success rate of graduates working and furthering their study around the world, winning awards and doing very well, thank you.
Take Marcos Dias, a graduate of Design and Creative Media in 2008; he was the first ever graduate to be awarded a distinction from Trinity College in Interactive Digital Media Masters. He has also been involved in the renowned Designing Dublin project www.design21c.com and will undertake a PhD this year.
And the firsts continue, Dan McMenaman, a graduate of Digital Media, has been working on ‘The Covies’, the first online soap in Ireland. Launched this year, this quirky soap on rural life has been very popular. Dan operated the sound, steadicam and shot some of the episodes. He brought in fellow LYIT graduate Ronan to develop the visuals and web for the soap.
Then there's Owen Gallagher, who has had a global career, working in design in Dublin and US before returning to Ireland to complete a Masters at the University of Ulster. He founded TotalRecut.com, an online social networking community for fans and creators of video remixes, recuts and mash-ups which encourages online collaboration. TotalRecut received a ‘Quality Seal’ in the 2008 Europrix Multimedia Awards, was shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards including the Golden Spiders Awards. He has recently set up Our Writers Bloc Ltd, which provides free downloads of contemporary literature designed to be read on mobile reading devices, such as the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader and Apple iPad. The business was a finalist in the 2009 iQPrize business start-up competition.
Ahmad Fakhry, LYIT Product Design graduate and winner of Derek Hill Award 2009, is currently working on his Masters at the NCAD. Ahmad has recently received another award at the NCAD for his design work and has been offered a placement at the prestigious Aarhus University, Denmark.
Nollaig Crombie, Head of Department of Design & Creative Media, is naturally very proud, “Their success is testament to the quality, passion and talent of the design and digital media graduates at LYIT. It’s no surprise to me that many have won awards, and have achieved distinctions in their academic and commercial careers. I congratulate them. I’m delighted that our graduates do stay in touch and keep us posted about what they’re doing. It’s a great source of pride for us at LYIT and inspirational for the current students as well.”
