Minister for Health & Children visits LYIT
Mary Harney honours Florence Nightingale at LYIT’s ‘Student Health Awareness’
The Minister for Health & Children, Mary Harney, visited LYIT on 19 April 2010 to officially launch the 'Student Health Awareness' campaign. The campaign was devised by nursing students to mark the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing. The aim of the 'Health Awareness' days was to provide information on topical issues such as Health and Wellbeing, Mental Health Awareness, Sexual Health Awareness and Life Style Behaviours (drugs and alcohol misuse/addiction). LYIT Nursing students ran the two-day health awareness sessions throughout the college which were all over-subscribed.
Dr Maura Pidgeon, Head of Department of Nursing & Health Studies at LYIT said, “The students wanted to mark Florence Nightingale’s anniversary in a practical and enjoyable way by involving the wider student population. It was a very successful way to do this and one which they put a lot of effort into. We were delighted the Minister came to mark the day and I think she was very impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm.”
