Sunday Times University Guide 2010

LYIT powers up the ranks on national league table.

LYIT has shot up the Sunday Times league table and is now ranked 14th in Ireland against Universities and other ITs.  Described as a college which, “provides facilities and courses expected of the bigger universities but with a more intimate atmosphere...”, LYIT rose seven places on the national league table for 2009.  LYIT’s socially inclusive policy, location and its increase in research funding contributed to the rating.

LYIT has won significant research projects in the last year and has almost doubled its income in this area to €1.5 million.  It has also recently launched a state of the art business incubation centre – CoLab.

Paul Hannigan, President, commenting on the ranking said, “It reflects the efforts on the ground which are taking place in the college.  We are adhering closely to the goals outlined in the strategic plan of delivering quality education, relevant to industry, through research and innovation. I would like to thank the staff for their commitment and we’re looking forward to another busy year ahead.”

Students based at CoLab are conducting industry-led research Masters in science, design, business, computing and engineering, many working with local companies such as SITA and Earagail Eisc.  These studies could have significant impact in the future and have come about through collaboration with companies to identify specific industry conundrums and to look for ways to solve them.  The findings could have worldwide impact and lead to spin-off industries and employment in the region.
