    This new degree in Health and Social Studies is a new and dynamic programme for those interested in a career in this rapidly expanding area. It brings together the disciplines of healthcare and social sciences. The course investigates the multiplicity of factors, social, biological, psychological and cultural that impact on health outcomes and social policy in Ireland.
    Minimum Academic Entry Requirements
    Grade D3 or higher in at least five ordinary level subjects at Leaving Certificate, including Maths and either Irish or English, or an equivalent qualification.

    Learning Outcomes
    Learning outcomes of this programme include the following. The graduate will be able to:
    • Discuss the implications of legislation relevant to the provision of health and social care
    • Practice safely across the spectrum of legislation and guidelines outlined in the Health and Social Care Professionals Act (2005)
    • Promote educational development, health and well-being in clients for whom they provide care
    • Function as an independent practitioner accountable for their practice
    • Evaluate the environmental factors which affect the health of vulnerable/marginalized groups in society
    • Critically appraise the ethical issues required to deliver safe and effective professional practice
    • Identify the health related needs of a wide range of client groups in order to devise, develop and implement an effective health and social care programme
    Work Placement
    The work placement module in each semester is an integral part of the course. It will provide the learner with exposure to the Healthcare and Social setting for the purpose of acquiring skills to meet the holistic needs of a range of client groups. It will also allow for the learner to reflect on his/her practice.
    Are there follow-up Programmes Available?
    On successful completion of this programme it is anticipated that learners will have the opportunity to continue their studies to a level 8 Bachelor of Science (Hon) in Health and Social Studies.
    Graduates from this programme may also pursue further studies at other Universities in Ireland or abroad. Acceptance on any programme is at the discretion of the college to which the candidate applies.
    Career Opportunities
    On completion of this programme learners will have a wide range of transferable skills applicable to a broad spectrum of areas to include residential childcare, intellectual disability services, respite services, adult services, older people, health promotion, women’s aid and nursing homes.

    • A capacity to analyse problems and apply solutions based on best practice.
    • Good communication skills.
    • An interest in working with people who are ill and in need of care and support.

    Standard Code applicants must have passed at least 6 Leaving Certificate subjects, including the following subjects & results:
    • English or Irish 0D3 or better (not Foundation Level Irish)

    • A laboratory science subject (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Physics & Chemistry joint or Agricultural Science) (UK/NI Grade C or higher GC(S)E

    • A minimum of grade of D3 in the remaining papers.

    Mature Applicants
    A quota of 5 places is allocated specifically for mature applicants on this programme. Mature Applicants (aged 23 or over on January 1st in the year of application) who do not meet the minimum educational requirements should apply via the CAO, using the mature code, before February 1st. These applicants will be required to undertake an aptitude test and interview (organised by An Bord Altranais). Candidates are advised to prepare well for interview and may find it useful to undertake some research of their own so that they have a broad overview of their chosen career. Mature applicants who fail to use the correct code or who apply after February 1st will be treated as standard applicants and will be assessed only the basis of Leaving Cert (or equivalent ) results presented.

    Entry to the course will be via normal CAO Applications Processes. The course will be available to applicants who meet the following criteria:
    Standard Code applicants must have passed at least 5 Leaving Certificate Subjects, including the following subjects:
    • English or Irish at 0D3 or higher (not Foundation Level Irish).
    • Leaving Cert Maths: 0rdinary level at grade D3 or better, or Higher Level at grade E or better or Foundation maths at grade B2 or higher
    • At least 3 other subjects at 0D3 or higher.

    Work Placement
    Work placement is an integral part of each semester and provides students with an opportunity to learn from experience through supervised practice. Experiential learning in this way provides opportunities to reflect on practice and to apply theory to practice. The work placement also provides the student with opportunities for observation and engagement in needs assessment, early childhood curriculum planning and implementation.

    On successful completion of this course it is anticipated that learners will have the opportunity to continue their studies to a level 8 Bachelor of Science (Hon) in Early Childhood Care, Health and Education.
    What are the job prospects?
    The childcare Act 1991 and ensuing regulation of early childhood care and education together with other national initiatives has created a strong demand for graduates of childcare studies who are able to work across traditional disciplinary and professional boundaries. Consequently, childcare and education is a rapidly expanding service that is providing career and further educational opportunities for graduates.
    The main employers are:
    • Private Sector Childcare Facilities such as crèches, nurseries, playgroups, pre-schools, homework clubs;
    • The Health Services – special needs services, family support services and community services
    • Primary Schools – classroom assistant;
    • Other Public Services – specialist advisor, researcher, social planning.

    • An interest in acquiring the skills necessary to work with and care for people with a wide variety of intellectual disability problems
    • A capacity to analyse problems and apply solutions based on best practice.
    • Good communication skills.
    • An interest in working with people who have intellectual disability problems and are in need of education, care, support and rehabilitation.
    Minimum Academic Entry Requirements
    Standard Code applicants must have passed at least 6 Leaving Certificate subjects, including the following subjects & results:
    • English or Irish 0D3 or better (not Foundation Level Irish)
    • Mathematics 0D3 (not Foundation Level Mathematics) (UK/NI Grade C or higher CG(S)E)
    • A laboratory science subject (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Physics & Chemistry joint or Agricultural Science) (UK/NI Grade C or higher CG(S)E)
    • Three other subjects
    • A minimum of Grade C3 in at least two higher-level papers (UK/ N.I. minimum of two A levels)
    • A minimum of grade of D3 in the remaining papers.

    Have equivalent educational qualifications to those outlined above. The minimum entry requirements may be accumulated from more than one sitting of the Leaving Certificate or an equivalent examination.     Mature Applicants
    A quota of 9 places is allocated specifically for mature applicants on this programme. Mature Applicants (aged 23 or over on January 1st in the year of application) who do not meet the minimum educational requirements should apply via the CAO, using the mature code, before February 1st. These applicants will be required to undertake an aptitude test and interview (organised by An Bord Altranais). Candidates are advised to prepare well for interview and may find it useful to undertake some research of their own so that they have a broad overview of their chosen career. Mature applicant who fail to use the correct code or who apply after February 1st will be treated as standard applicants and will be assessed only the basis of Leaving Cert (or equivalent ) results presented.

    This new and exciting 1 year add-on degree to the level 7 programme will provide the graduate with an in-depth comprehensive knowledge and work place experience in two of the more complex and essential services required in society i.e. health and social care.

    Minimum Entry Requirements
    This is a two semester add-on honours degree programme for students who have achieved a level 7 B.Sc. in Health and Social Studies. Students who have completed an equivalent programme at level 7 with appropriate learning outcomes would also be considered for acceptance.

    The work placement in semester 8 will enhance the learner’s ability to integrate theory and practice and increase their knowledge of research skills and attitudes towards ethical practice in a professional setting. It will also enable the learner to become a safe, caring and competent decision maker, willing to take personal and professional accountability for evidence based practice. 
    Are there follow-up Programmes Available
    The degree matches the requirements for postgraduate professional training in Social Work in the Republic of Ireland and in the UK/Northern Ireland. The course also allows graduates to take programmes leading to Masters degree (by research) or a Doctoral Degree (by research) internally at LYIT or through a range of other institutes of technology and universities in Ireland and abroad.
    Career Opportunities
    The programme will provide the graduate with an in-depth comprehensive knowledge and work place experience in two of the more complex and essential services required in society i.e. health and social care.     Entry Requirements
    1. Registration or eligibility to register as a Nurse with An Bord Altranais.
    2. Two years post registration experience, of which six months is in the intended area of specialisation.
    3. Candidates must be employed in the relevant specialty for the duration of the programme.
    Selection Process
    Candidates who meet the entry requirements and have the approval of their employer will be required to undertake an assessment procedure and eligible applicants will be ranked. The assessment will include a written and oral presentation and interview and will normally takes place in mid May.
    Course Fee
    There is a fee for each programme. In some instances this fee may be covered by the HSE. However, applicants should make internal enquiries from their employers and seek confirmation for any such arrangement before making any such assumption.
    Applications
    Programmes generally commence in September each year but applications must be submitted to the Registry at LYIT several months in advance. Normally applications should be submitted by February 1st in the proposed year of entry. On time Applications are free of charge.
    At the sole discretion of LYIT, late applications may be accept up until May 1st but, where accepted, these applications will attract a late application fee of €90 *.
    First round offers will normally issue in July. Successful applicants will be required to reply promptly. In the event that an applicant should fail to respond correctly or on time the offer will lapse and the place may be offered to the next person on the waiting list.
