Programme Title Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Fire Safety Engineering CAO Code Add-on Programme, not available via CAO LYIT internal code LY_EFIRE_B Duration 1 Year, post Ordinary Degree Standard Code Places: 20 National Framework Level 8 Award Type Major Awarding Body LYIT, under Delegated Authority from HETAC - Is this Programme for Me?
- For many years the country has become increasingly conscious of the hazards of fire in buildings. Much of this awareness has been brought about be some terrible fire tragedies in our past, such as the Stardust disaster (1981). There have been many regulations introduced to improve the fire safety aspects of buildings and these regulations play a very significant part in building design. Design teams obtain fire safety certificates from the local authority to show that the building conforms to the regulations. The Fire Safety Engineer is someone who, along with other members of the design team, ensures that this is the case.
- The BSc Honours in Fire Safety Engineering (level 8) is a unique programme. Students on this programme study a range of mainstream and specialised fire technology subjects. The programme was designed with the needs of modern and existing buildings in mind. The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Fire Safety Engineering graduate will focus on the application of the science and implementation of the knowledge derived from the study programme. The aim of the programme is to give the graduate the knowledge and skills to do this successfully.
- Minimum Academic Entry Requirements
- Applicants must have successfully completed the Bachelor of Science in Construction and Fire Technology Degree, or an equivalent (level 7) qualification with 180 ECTS credits and appropriate learning outcomes. Graduates of a level 7 Degree in Civil Engineering or Building Services Engineering with appropriate bridging studies are also eligible to participate in the programme.

- The graduate will have a detailed knowledge and understanding of:
- Complex nature of the fire growth process in the context of building compartment fires.
- Fire safety problems and concerns relevant to the construction industry, and individual building design in particular.
- Major techniques and approaches involved in fire safety design.
- Integration of the various technical aspects of the overall fire safety design objectives in building design.
- Legal regulatory framework and responsibilities involved in relation to construction and fire safety issues.
- Technical limits and complex issues posed in achieving fire safety objectives.
- Importance of fire safety management issues and the knowledge to address these with respect to fire safety engineering in building design, prescriptive building regulations requirements and evolving fire safety-engineering methodologies.
- Are there follow-up Programmes Available?
- There is a growing need for people with fire safety skills and an awareness of the complexities of achieving fire safety in existing and new buildings. This need has grown from the desire of people for safer buildings and the increasing regulations both at National and EU level. Wherever there is a building design team there is an opportunity for a Fire Technologist.
