Programme Title Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering CAO Code LY527 LYIT internal code LY_CCIVL_D Duration 3 Years ab initio Standard Code Places: 50 National Framework Level 7 Award Type Major Awarding Body LYIT, under Delegated Authority from HETAC - Is this Programme for Me?
- Civil Engineering is concerned with most of the infrastructure that contributes to modern civilisation. Civil Engineers are involved with the planning, design and construction of facilities for living, industry and transport. This would include structures such as dams, bridges, roads, tunnels, railways, airports, harbours and large buildings, and public services such as sewerage and water supply facilities. Civil Engineers are increasingly concerned with tackling environmental problems relating to air, ground and water pollution.
- This programme is designed to provide a broad based technician level training in the field of Civil Engineering. Your studies will include: construction technology, civil engineering methods of construction, land surveying, drawing up of site maps showing various ground levels, scientific principles relating to fluids such as water, study of soil types and characteristics and their significance in the design of road and structural foundations, design of sewerage systems and sewerage treatment works, building site management and administration, drawing and analysis of steel and concrete structures with the aid of computer systems, laboratory testing of materials to assess whether they conform to strength requirements, etc.
- Students are introduced to up-to-date equipment and techniques and get hands-on experience of using electronic surveying instruments, computer programmes for civil engineering and computer aided design (CAD) systems. Site visits are an integral part of the programme. The laboratories are well equipped with modern experimental and test equipment.
- Minimum Academic Entry Requirements
- The basic entry requirement for admission to all Level 7 engineering programmes (Semester 1) is a pass (OD3 or better) in five Leaving Certificate subjects, including passes in Mathematics and in either Irish or English (or an equivalent qualification). Foundation/Alternative Maths is not acceptable.

- The graduate will have knowledge of the underlying theories and fundamental concepts, while recognising the limitations of their knowledge, in the analysis of:
- Construction
- Hydraulics
- Surveying
- Geotechnics (Soils)
- Civil Engineering Materials
- Structures
- Professional Practice
- Mathematics
- The graduate will have developed the skills required to solve common engineering problems enabling him/her to:
- Recognise the main safety issues in a Civil Engineering environment
- Be competent to undertake land survey and building measurement.
- Perform basic hydraulic calculations.
- Be competent to perform standard testing and evaluation of civil engineering materials in accordance with Irish, European and British standards
- Be competent to perform standard testing and evaluation of soils and foundations in accordance with Irish, European and British standards
- Produce elementary structural design in accordance with Irish, European and British Standards
- Prepare and interpret structural engineering drawings
- Apply computer aided design packages in structural analysis, design and drawing
- Identify basic project management techniques
- Present statistical analysis
- Appraise safety considerations in a Civil Engineering environment
- Communicate effectively with engineers and others
- Integrate concepts of sustainability in their work.
- Are there follow-up Programmes Available?
- Graduates from this programme may pursue further studies to Honours and Masters Degree levels at other Institutes or Universities in Ireland or abroad. A fully accredited IEI (Institution of Engineers Ireland) degree in Civil Engineering (Honours Bachelor of Engineering) normally takes two years of further study.
- Progression to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Fire Safety Engineering is available at LYIT.
- Career Opportunities
- Civil Engineering offers excellent career prospects with good opportunities to travel. As a Civil Engineering Technician you could:
- Work for a consulting company in the preparation of design drawings for steel and concrete structures.
- Be employed by local authorities or private contractors in the supervision and building of pipelines or sewerage works.
- Be a land surveyor, measuring and producing site maps and surveys.
