- Quantity Surveyors are the accountants of the construction industry and are employed by building developers, designers and contractors to:-
- Examine building design drawings and estimate the construction cost
- Cost plan construction projects
- Advise the design team of the cost implications of design changes
- Advise on legal matters in relation to construction contracts
- Ensure that the construction project represents value for money and that the project remains within the agreed budget
- The aim of the programme is to produce graduates capable of demonstrating the knowledge and range of high level skills and competencies necessary for the cost management of construction projects
- Minimum Academic Entry Requirements
- The basic entry requirement for admission to all Level 7 engineering programmes (Semester 1) is a pass (OD3 or better) in five Leaving Certificate subjects, including passes in Mathematics and in either Irish or English (or an equivalent qualification). Foundation/Alternative Maths is not acceptable.

- What will I have to study?
- The Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying includes elements of Business, Law Construction and Civil Engineering. Students participate in computer methods & applications, practical laboratory work, research and design projects.

- On completion of the programme, graduates will have the necessary skills to enable them to develop and provide Quantity Surveying services, which will typically include:-
- Measurement and cost planning of building projects
- Preparation of tender pricing documentation
- Advice on the selection of building contractors

- Cash flow projections
- Calculation of payments due to contractors
- Agreeing final accounts
- The effects of taxation and grant advice in relation to buildings

- Are there follow-up Programmes Available?
- Graduates from this programme may pursue further studies to gain full accreditation from the Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS) with Honours and Masters Degrees at other universities in Ireland or abroad. LyIT is setting up links with other institutes and universities to enable graduate transfer and also proposes to run a on year add-on BSc Honours in Quantity Surveying.

- Professional Accreditation
- The Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS) is the professional body of Chartered Surveyors in Ireland. The level 7 BSc in Quantity Surveying has been approved by the SCS at technician level. This means that graduates of the programme are eligible to complete their Assessment of Technical Competence (ATC) and apply for the title of Technical Surveyor (TechSCS). The LyIT programme is the first to be approved by the SCS for the new technical grade of membership.
